Must-Know Tips for How to Decorate a Cake

1. Start With the Right Cake Baking Tools

Making and decorating a cake is much easier when you have the right (and better) tools for the job. If you don’t know baking cakes or just want to make sure you have a complete “toolbox”, check out the essential baking tools that every baker should have.

2. Start With a Blank Slate

Decorating a cake with a flat top is the best. When the oven temperature is too high, the cakes develop rounded tops. Use an oven thermometer to check the temperature of your oven.

3. Prep Your Pan

Cover the pan with parchment paper to make sure the cake comes out easily. Learn to anoint the cake pan.

4. Cover Sides With Ease

To apply nuts, sparks or coconut to the sides of a cake, hold the cake on a pan and gently touch the nuts, etc. at the sides by hand.

5. Plot Out Your Message

Before writing on a cake with icing, gently outline the words with a toothpick.

6. Keep Your Station Clean

To keep the cake clean during the frosting, align the edge with strips of 3-inch wax paper. Center the first layer of cake on the strips. At the end of the enamelling, carefully remove the strips one at a time.

Peaks

To decorate your cake with elegant scrolls, all you need is the tip of a spoon. To apply, place a generous amount of nail polish on the back of the spoon. Place the spoon on the cake with the tip in position 12, then rotate the spoon in a semicircle to the left, ending up in position 6. Repeat until the cake is covered.

Zigzags

Pass the teeth of a table fork through the icing with a wavy movement.

Waves

Use the back of a spoon or a teaspoon to make a small twist movement in one direction. Then move the spoon slightly and make another turn in the opposite direction. Repeat until the whole cake is covered.
